Fishing Wisdom: Fish when the Tide is going Out.

I recently heard this story and was grateful for the lesson. I am sure you will find it interesting and perhaps useful. This is about a profound encounter a young boy had with an old fisherman. Little did he know that this encounter would not only transform his day of fishing but also impart a timeless lesson about life itself.

The boy, just 11 years old, had been sitting by the water’s edge for hours, diligently casting his fishing line into the sparkling waters, but to no avail. He was getting frustrated. An elderly fisherman, was watching the young boy and went over and sat down next to him, his weathered face etched with a lifetime of (fishing) wisdom.

With a friendly smile, the fisherman turned to the young boy and asked, “Why aren’t you catching any fish, my young friend?” The boy, his eyes downcast, replied, “I don’t know. I’ve been trying all day, but nothing’s biting.”

The fisherman, a man of few words, pointed to the water and said, “You see, young one, you’ve been trying to catch fish when the tide is coming in. But you should be casting your line when the tide is going out. It will happen in the next 45 minutes.” He showed him exactly where to cast his line. This intrigued the boy and he waited till the tide was going out and followed the fisherman’s advice and cast his line once more.

As if by magic, the boy’s line began to tug, and soon he was pulling in fish after fish, not just one or two, but by the tens. His face lit up with amazement and joy. It seemed like a moment of pure serendipity and revelation.

The fisherman then asked the young boy to sit down and said he wanted to share a thought with him, saying, “Life, my young friend, is much like fishing. There are times in life you may find that things are looking bleak, when the tide of luck and circumstances appears to be going against you. But it’s during these moments that you should cast your line into the waters of possibility. Embrace change, embrace challenges, and you may find yourself catching the ‘fish’ of your dreams.”

It was a lesson that extended far beyond the realm of fishing; it was a lesson about embracing change in adversity, trying something new, something different from what you did before and you will find opportunity, bounty and serendipity there.

This simple yet profound tale reminds us that life is full of ebbs and flows, highs and lows. While it’s easy to lament the times when the tide seems to be going out, it’s during those very moments that we should be awake to the boundless possibilities before us. Instead of mourning the past or dwelling on misfortune, we should be looking ahead, ready to cast our line into the future, with hope, determination, and an unwavering belief that better things are waiting to be discovered.

So, if ever you find yourself in a situation where the tide of life appears to be going out, don’t get discouraged, remember the wisdom of the old fisherman and the young boy by the sea. Embrace the change, be willing to try something new and cast your line into the unfamiliar. Who knows what incredible “fish” you might catch when the tide is going out.
