Focusing on something and completing what I started has always been a challenge and is a work in progress. The issue is of course Self-motivation or should I say – the lack thereof. Self-motivation is that internal drive and determination that propels you to take action and work towards your goals, even in the face of challenges or distractions. Especially distractions.

So this is what I learnt about Self-motivation – It’s a learnable skill and helpful for achieving success and personal growth. Being self-motivated can be cultivated through various practices and approaches. Here are some that will get you started:

1. Set clear goals: Define specific, achievable goals that are meaningful to you. Break them down into smaller, manageable tasks to maintain a sense of progress and accomplishment.

2. Find your passion: Engage in activities that align with your interests and values. When you’re passionate about what you’re doing, it becomes easier to stay motivated and focused.

3. Create a positive environment: Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you. Additionally, organise your physical and digital spaces in a way that promotes productivity and minimises distractions.

4. Develop a routine: Establishing a consistent routine helps build discipline and makes it easier to stay motivated. Allocate dedicated time for your tasks and prioritise them accordingly.

5. Celebrate milestones: Acknowledge your achievements along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating milestones boosts your morale and reinforces positive behaviour.

6. Seek inspiration: Read books, listen to podcasts, or watch videos that inspire and motivate you. Learning from others who have achieved success can provide valuable insights and keep you motivated.

7. Practice self-care: Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and maintain a balanced diet. When you feel good physically, it positively impacts your motivation and energy levels.

8. Break tasks into smaller steps: If a task feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. This approach makes it easier to tackle and keeps you motivated as you see progress.

9. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity: Don’t be discouraged by setbacks or failures. Instead, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Use them as stepping stones to improve and keep moving forward.

10. Stay focused on the big picture: Remind yourself of the reasons why you want to achieve your goals. Visualize the end result and the positive impact it will have on your life. Keeping the big picture in mind can be a powerful motivator.

It was also important for me to remind myself that self-motivation is a skill that develops over time and to be patient with myself. Keep at it.
