PREFACE

Before the Sacred Fire

How to Understand and Live the Seven Vows of Indian Marriage.

In every Indian wedding, there comes a sacred moment — the couple stands before the fire, hands joined, hearts racing. They take seven vows, the saat pheras, each one a promise meant to last a lifetime. The fire is witness, the family is witness, and the divine is witness.

But tragically, most couples say these vows without truly understanding them. They enter marriage with more preparation for the wedding day than for the married life that follows. They have planned the flowers, the clothes, the guest list — but not the conversations that will shape their future together.

This book is your opportunity to change that. The title Before the Sacred Fire holds a double meaning. It is about the moment before you physically stand in front of the fire at your wedding — and also the time before you begin the lifelong journey it symbolises. It is the space where you can pause, reflect, and have the conversations that will make those vows real in your life.

In these pages, you will find guidance on the practical, emotional, and cultural aspects of marriage — all reframed through the lens of the seven vows. You will see how discussing topics like finances, living arrangements, family expectations, and daily responsibilities can transform your relationship before it begins.

Whether you are a bride, groom, or a parent wanting the best for your children, this is your invitation to prepare — not just for a perfect wedding, but for a strong, joyful, and lasting marriage.

So, before you stand before the sacred fire… let’s talk.

Afterword

The idea for this book is the brainchild of Mr. Om Prakash Arora, ACP (Retd.), Delhi Police. During his tenure at the Women’s Cell in Delhi, he observed that many of the cases brought to the cell stemmed from misunderstandings and unmet expectations—issues that could have been prevented with the right preparation before marriage – He strongly believed that if couples were better equipped to manage expectations and navigate their relationship dynamics beforehand, a significant number of conflicts could be avoided. This realization led him to believe there was a need for PreMarital Advice—a guide to help couples build a strong foundation for a lasting and harmonious marriage.

Marriage in India is not just about two people—it’s about two families, traditions, and lifelong commitments. Yet, amidst the excitement of wedding preparations, many couples overlook the most crucial aspect: preparing for life after the wedding.

This book serves as a practical guide for engaged couples, helping them navigate the important but often unspoken aspects of marriage. Helping them live in the present while aligning with rituals and tradition. From understanding expectations and handling conflicts to financial planning, family dynamics, and personal growth, it covers essential topics that every couple must discuss before tying the knot.

With relatable examples, thought-provoking questions, and actionable advice, “Before the Sacred Fire” encourages open conversations that lay the foundation for a happy and fulfilling marriage. Whether you’re deeply in love or in an arranged match, this book will help you step into married life with clarity, confidence, and a strong sense of partnership.

Because a great marriage isn’t just about love—it’s about understanding, trust, and the promises you choose to make and keep.
